September 2025: Visit of the Guinean Minister of Hydraulics to the Conakry Sanitation Project construction sites

20 October 2025 admin

The Guinean Minister of Hydraulics and Hydrocarbons led a major field visit to oversee the progress of the Conakry sanitation project, studied by CONCEPT and whose work is supervised by the CIRA-CONCEPT group. This official trip, carried out in collaboration with theNational Agency for Public Health, underlines the absolute priority given by the government to strengthening the fight against insalubrity in the Guinean capital.

Ce projet structurant marque un tournant décisif pour l’environnement et la salubrité publique à Conakry. Il s’insère dans le cadre de l’objectif national qui est de redonner à la capitale sa propreté légendaire.

Status Report and Official Schedule

Work on the Sonfonia station is currently at the most advanced stage of the overall plan. According to the latest estimates confirmed on site, the facility will be completed by the end of November 2025.

  • Yimbaya Sludge Treatment Plant: Start-up in October 2025

The future Yimbaya station will enter the active construction phase from October 2025. The construction site will be completed by the end of 2026.

  • Rehabilitation of the Mining Landfill and New Garage

The project also includes a major rehabilitation operation of the Minière landfill. Combined with the construction of a new garage for rolling stock, this infrastructure is crucial for optimizing the entire waste collection logistics chain.

  • Construction of 54 km of rainwater drainage channels and culverts

The aim is to provide the two municipalities of Ratoma and Matoto, the most densely populated in the capital, with a sufficient network for the evacuation of runoff water generated by the rains of Conakry, which receives 4000 mm per year on average. This infrastructure is a corollary of good solid waste management given the inadequacy of the current stormwater drainage network and the frequent obstructions of its structures by garbage carried by runoff water onto the roads. The work underway since 11/11/2024 will be completed around September 2026 according to what was communicated to the Minister.

Government Involvement to Meet Deadlines

This direct government involvement ensures rigorous monitoring of the progress of sanitation projects. It demonstrates a strong political will to sustainably resolve the waste problem in Conakry, with concrete projects and a schedule that is now appropriate and rigorously monitored by the government.
