SUMMARY PRE-PROJECT STUDY OF A DAM ON OUED EL HAMMAM-DELEGATION OF ZRIBA GOVERNORATE OF ZAGHOUAN


The preliminary study of a dam on Oued el Hammam is part of the national strategy for the mobilization of surface water, and thus contributed to stimulate the regional development of the Governorate of Zaghouan.
A preliminary study was carried out by J. COIGNET in 1909-1912, and proposed the creation of a reservoir dam between the two mountainous massifs of Djebel Bou Kouf and Djebal Chebli, at the level of the region of Bir el Afou, just upstream of the hydrothermal spring of Hammam ZRIBA.


PHASE I: Review of previous studies and selection of the dam axis (3 months)
Inventory of the proposed area based on baseline data and topographic maps of the area, taking into account the Administration's proposal, and determination of the watershed characteristics,
Survey and site visit of the entire site by the study team in order to propose the potential axes for the implementation of the associated works,
Preliminary geological study on the basis of available data and the results of in situ surveys: (structure and quality of the dam supports, thickness of the alluvial bed, watertightness of the basin, available materials, stability of the banks, seismicity, ....) including a detailed geological plan of the sector on a scale of 1/500, appropriate geological sections, and a 3D model in space of the foundation of the dam
Determination of the impact of the future reservoir on the hydrothermal source of Hammam Zriba, through a careful geological and hydrogeological study. A microtectonic study (fracturing) is essential.
The risk of contamination of the water in the reservoir by mining discharges, if they exist,
Preliminary topographic study of each proposed axis, useful capacity of the reservoir, height-volume law, topographic yield, width of the valley (determines the evacuation capacity), including plan of the basin, cross-section in the axis of implementation, height-surface and height-volume curve (use of fine satellite images and production of Digital Terrain Models: DTM, in order to know the basins of the reservoirs and their topographic yield, ...)
Hydrological study of each axis selected on the basis of available data and previous studies (project flood, water inflow, quality and salinity of the water in the reservoir, flood control, etc.) and including a watershed map showing the main results,
Study of the pre-dimensioning of the structure and its capacity taking into account the above-mentioned objectives (proposal of possible development variants),
Summary technical-economic evaluation and comparison of the different potential routes, Impact of the Project mentioning the most notable consequences of the impoundment of the reservoir on the occupation of the basin and on the communication routes, etc.
Choice of the most favorable axis for the realization of the dam,
PHASE II: development of the preliminary design (6 months)
Hydrological studies based on all available data (climatic elements, average water supply and for different return periods, flow according to return periods, characteristics of the project flood, project flood hydrograph, ...) and estimation of the solid contribution (silting),
Geological, geotechnical and seismic studies
Interaction of the future reservoir with the Rmal dam (study of the advantages and disadvantages of a location upstream of Rmal, ...)
Summary technico-economic evaluation of the variants of possible structures with cost presentations leading to the definition of the most suitable and economical type of dam with evaluation of the optimum cost per cubic meter.
Estimated cost of the Project,
Propose a program of studies and complementary surveys to be carried out during the subsequent phases of the study
